Younger generation of MPs

Allow me to thank Censu Galea, Minister for Transport, for his intelligent proposal to reorganise our outdated public transport system. I know that the minister's tenacity will succeed against all the selfish opposition from the bus owners and their union.

The proposal for the introduction of a new service, linking neighbouring localities, utilising the surplus capacity on existing bus routes, will be the best way to deal with the falling number of passengers. The beneficial effects will be immediately felt at the Valletta terminus, as well as helping in no small way in reducing traffic congestion everywhere. To give just one example of how badly needed this service is, suffice to say that, in my case, when I need to travel from Attard to Mosta, barely one-and-a-half miles away, I have to go to Valletta and take a bus to Mosta from there. Similarly if I need to go to Zebbug, Qormi or Siggiewi. The excellent idea of having a mix of buses with different capacities to suit particular routes is also a very practical and sensible way of providing a modern service to outlying villages. May I also thank David Agius for his support and backing of this very worthwhile root and branch revolution in our present creaking transport system. I would also like to appeal to local councils everywhere to heed the minister's appeal to make proposals for new routes, in time, to enable the minister to consider their viability. An enhanced public service will be beneficial not only to the public because it will be better served but also to the very bus owners, who are witnessing falling numbers of passengers because of the shabby service they currently offer. I conclude by also appealing to constituents, who stand to benefit from this effort, to make known their support and give well-earned encouragement to both the minister and Mr Agius for all their hard work which, unfortunately, is not always very apparent.
