Time to be Cautious

This week, parliament has reconvened after the summer
recess. Parliament is back in business for the new season and we have a tight
agenda. There is a lot of work ahead of us.
We are committed to our electorate and to the Maltese people to the electoral
promises that we aim to deliver over the five years of this term. The
government’s will to deliver is consistent and ever present. However, as a
responsible government, we also need to take into consideration the reality
around us.

|
At the moment, the world is not going through a rosy phase. Financial systems
around the world are bleeding, and bleeding heavily at that. Huge amounts of
money are being forked out by various governments, either to bail out banks in
trouble or to maintain liquidity in the markets and the banking system.

Birth of a Nation

|
This weekend we are going to celebrate the 44th anniversary of our
Independence Day. Forty-four years ago Malta became a nation, gained its
independence and became a master of its own future.
As a nation we had to fend for ourselves and take our own decisions on
a 360-degree basis. We were also responsible for our own action. Nobody was
there to guide us.
As any child, Malta had to learn from its own mistakes. The initial years were
not easy, but slowly we got there. We needed to build our pillars: our economic
pillars, our social pillars, our institutional pillars and our democratic
pillars. We could not develop any of these while neglecting others.

Sweet 16 voters : John Dalli & David
Agius Preceded Muscat by Four Years
|
| |
|
|
|
|
|
 |
|
It was not Labour Party leader Joseph Muscat who first
proposed lowering the voting age to 16. Nor was it Alternattiva Demokratika,
which only preceded Muscat by a few months.
|
|
|
It wasn’t even the PN’s Information director Frank Psaila, who also wrote in
favour of lowering the voting age as the MZPN’s public relations officer in
March.
The honour for being the first to propose the enfranchisement of Malta’s
16-year-olds goes to Nationalist whip David Agius and Social
Policy Minister John Dalli.
